The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, located in New Delhi, India, is a multi-purpose sports arena named after Jawaharlal Nehru, who was the first Prime Minister of independent India. The stadium hosts football and other sporting events along with entertainment events. It is reckoned as the fourth largest multi-purposestadium in India , 27th-largest in Asia, and 103rd-largest globally based on seating capacity. The Stadium hosted eight matches during the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup. It was also selected as one of the venues for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, originally scheduled to be held in India in 2020 but ultimately postponed to 2022.
The complex of the stadium houses the headquarters of Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the field arm of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. From 2014 to 2019, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium served as the home ground of Delhi Dynamos FC, a former Indian Super League club. In 2019, the club relocated to Bhubaneswar and was rebranded as Odisha FC.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium served as the venue for the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships, officially known as the IndianOil New Delhi 2025 World Para Athletics Championships. Organised by World Para Athletics, the athletics arm of the International Paralympic Committee, the event was the 12th edition of the World Para Athletics Championships. It was held from 27 September to 5 October 2025 and marked the first time that India hosted the championships.
Trivia
The Government of India constructed the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium for hosting the ninth Asian Games in 1982.
Two One Day International matches, featuring India against Australia in 1984 and South Africa in 1991 were held at this stadium.
Significance
It was the venue for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. The athletic events as well as both the opening and closing ceremonies were held in this stadium.
On 10th January, a friendly football match was arranged at the stadium between the Indian National Football Team and Bayern Munich as a farewell game of Bhaichung Bhutia who retired as the captain of Indian National Football Team.
The 2011 South Asian Football Federation Cup (or SAFF Cup) was held here when India emerged as the champions.
The 1989 Asian Championships in Athletics was held at this venue.
In July 2010, the first All Asian Athletics Championship was held in this stadium.
