Brazilian Football team who camped here before the Summer Olympics of the year 2000, remarked the surface of Carrara to be one of the best in the world.
The Carrara Stadium, commercially known as Metricon Stadium is one of the well-known sports venues, located in Queensland, Australia in the suburb of Carrara. The construction of the stadium began in 1986 and took a year to complete. The Government of Queensland owns the stadium. The stadium had no naming rights sponsor in its formative decades. On 15th March 2011, home builder group Metricon signed a $3 million, 5-year deal for the naming rights of the Carrera Stadium to be named as the Metricon Stadium. The stadium has a capacity of 25,000 since 2011 which can be increased with around 15,000 temporary seats.
Significance
- The stadium served as the home stadium for the Gold Coast District Cricket Club from 1990 to 1993.
- A newly set up rugby team the Gold Coast Chargers began playing their games in the stadium from 1996. They used the stadium until the end of the 1998 National Rugby League (NRL) season.
- American hard rock band "KISS" performed here in 2001.
- In 1988, the stadium hosted the first Touch Football World Cup events of Men, Women, Mixed and Men's Over 35's division. Australia won all the finals that were all played against New Zealand.
- The stadium hosted the home games of the Gold Coast Clippers in their 1989-1990 Australian Baseball League. Later, they shifted to the Palm Meadows.
- The Brazilian football team set up a camp at Carrera Stadium for their pre-tournament training before the 2000 Summer Olympics.
- It is serving as the home ground to the Gold Coast Football Club since 2011.
- The stadium also hosted the Sheffield Shield, One Day and T20 Internationals in Cricket.
- It has been chosen to host the opening and closing ceremony of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
