The International Association of Athletics Federation ("IAAF") is the only global governing body that sets the rules and regulations for Hammer Throw as follows:
1) Before the start of preliminary swing, the athletes are allowed to keep the hammer head inside or outside of the throwing circle.
2) It is not a foul if the hammer head is put on the ground before the preliminary swing but after the swing if the head of the hammer touches the ground or if the hammer is dropped by the athlete then it is counted as a foul.
3) When being in the air, if the hammer breaks then it will not be counted as foul unless the player has played as per the rules and regulations.
4) The head of the hammer should be made up of solid material like iron, brass or steel and should be in spherical shape with the standard dimensions.
5) The wire used should be single and unbroken type having a minimum diameter of 3mm.
6) The construction of the grip can be either single or double loop type but it should be rigid and should not have any hinging joints at both the sides.
7) The grip should be attached to the wire in such a manner that it cannot be turned within the loop of the wire.
8) Measurement of the hammer should be done from the inside of the grip.
