The surfing boards should have additional safety gear involving a foam, fibreglass or both the foam and fibreglass.
The participating dogs are required to wear a life jacket or a vest for their protection.
The human participant is also expected to wear a safety life jacket or vest and rash guard during the surf to protect themselves from injuries and to drown.
The participants, along with the visitors, are required to stay on the leash if they are not participating.
For the Tandem class events, the launching can be done by the owners or by a handler. Whereas, in the Shredder class, launching can only be performed by the owners.
In Shredder class events the SurFurs can surf against the dogs of any weight.
For the Surf City Surf Dog in Tandem class, paddles are provided in the Stand Up Paddle Class (SUP) events.
In the Handler Launched Weight Class of dog surfing, the launching is done solely by the handler. Whereas in the Owner Launched Weight Class, the dogs are launched only by the owners.
In the Owner Launched Weight Class, all the surfers are required to compete in surfing with the same weight class dogs.
Each surfer is scored by the judges on their highest two waves in each heat, combining as a total heat score.
The heat for the tandem heat class is for 10 minutes, whereas for the shredder heat is for 12 minutes which solely depends on the surfing conditions. The final heat is for 12 minutes, which is quite conditional.
A green flag is displayed followed a longhorn blast before the beginning of each heat.
There are two horn blasts when each heat begins.
All the competitors leave the water and return towards the rash guards by the end of the heat. During the return to the rash guards, the competitors receive their medals.
