The Istora Senayan Stadium has a sports hall which was built for hosting significant events of the 1962 Asian Games. The construction of the sports hall began on 24th August 1962.
The Istora Senayan is an indoor stadium, situated in Senayan, Jakarta, Indonesia. Opened on 24th August 1962, the stadium is used for hosting various sporting, communal activities and events. It stands in the neighbourhood of the Bung Karno Stadium. The stadium was initially referred as "Senayan". The word "Istora" means Palace of Sports. The construction of the Istora Senayan commenced on 8th February 1960 and took two years to complete. An estimated amount of $12,500,000 was spent on the construction of the stadium. It underwent a major expansion on 17th August 1962 and a significant renovation on 24th July 1962. The Government of Jakarta currently owns the stadium and is operated by Gelora Senayan Foundation (BPGS).
Significance
- Istora Senayan has hosted the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup seven times till now (in 1967, 1973, 1979, 1986, 1994, 2004 and 2008).
- The legendary boxer Muhammad Ali fought with Rudie Lubbers in the heavyweight non-title fight hosted by the venue in 1973.
- The stadium played host to the WBA Welterweight class Championship match between Saoul Mamby and Thomas Americo. It was held here in the year 1981.
- The Bantamweight Junior IBF Championship match between Ellyas Pical and Ju Do Chun was held at the stadium in the year 1985.
- The stadium has held the Indonesia Open of the BWF Super Series Badminton Championship, many times in between 1993-2010.
- The WBA Fur Championship match between Chris John and Roinet Caballero was held here in the year 2008.
