Simone Oliveira was the first female singer to perform at the Ginasio Gilberto Cardoso Gymnasium in the year 1981.
Also known as Maracanãzinho, Ginásio do Maracanãzinho (Ginasio Gilberto Cardoso) is an indoor arena, located in Maracanã, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The stadium was opened on 24th September 1954. The stadium is owned by Superintendência de Desportos do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. The arena is regarded as one of the best arenas to host basketball matches. The architecture of this arena was by Rafael Galvão, Antônio Dias Carneiro, Orlando Azevedo and Pedro Bastos. After a span of six months of construction, the arena opened its door to host sports events on 24th September 1954.
Significance
- Beauty contests such as Miss Guanabara (1950) and Miss Brazil (1960) were aslo held by Ginasio Gilberto Cardoso.
- The Ginasio Gilberto Cardoso stadium was the venue for the final match of the FIVB Volleyball World League in 2015.
- The stadium played host to FIBA Men's Basketball World's Championship in 1954 which was witnessed by 25,000 spectators. The arena hosted the championship again 1963.
- It also hosted the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship in the year 1960 and 1990.
- The arena has hosted the FIFA Futsal World Cup as a final venue in 2008 and World Judo Championship in 2013.
- The Volleyball events of the 2016 Summer Olympics were conducted at the arena.
- The arena has hosted numerous musical concerts such as Jackson Five, Metallica, Deep Purple, Venom, Iron Maiden, Genesis, The Police, and Megadeth.
