The stadium has been selected to host the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2022 Winter Olympics and for 2017 League of Legends World Championship.
The Beijing National Stadium, situated in Beijing, China is officially known as the National Stadium. The nickname of the stadium is the Bird’s Nest. The construction was started on 24th December 2003, the arena being beautifully designed by Herzog & de Meuron firm, ArupSport, China Architectural Design & Research Group and Ai Weiwei. It was finished in September 2007. An estimated amount of $423 million was spent on its construction. The stadium finally opened for spectators on 28th June 2008. It has served as home for the China National Football team (occasionally) and the China National Basketball Team from 2009 to 2010. The field has modular system turf installed by GreenTech ITM.
Significance
- The stadium has hosted the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, athletic events, and football finals of the 2008 Olympic Games which were held from 8th to 24th August.
- The stadium also hosted the 2015 World Championships in Athletics.
- The 2009 and 2011 Supercoppa Italiana finals were hosted by the stadium.
- Jackie Chan was the first artist who held a pop concert at the stadium on 2nd April 2009.
- The stadium has hosted the 2009 Race of Champions (a motor racing carnival).
- The Football League Championship match between Birmingham City and Beijing Guoan was held in this stadium in July 2010.
- The China Cup match between Manchester City and Arsenal was held in this stadium on 27th July 2012. Manchester City won the match.
- American-Chinese pop star Leehom Wang conducted the first solo pop concert at the stadium on 14th April 2012.
- Korean pop artists such as Kangta, BoA, TVXQ, Super Junior (Super Junior-M), Girls' Generation, SHINee, f(x), EXO, Zhang Liyin, and Tasty performed here on 19th October 2013 during the SMTown Live World Tour III.
