There are three two-minute rounds with a one-minute break between each round.
Scoring
One point is awarded for each legal strike on the body, but a kick on the head is worth 2-points. Punches to the head are not allowed.
Attacks made from the feet below the ankle and from the front of the index and middle fingers’ knuckles of the fist are the only valid attacks in the sport.
Penalties
Two types of penalties are there for illegal acts in Taekwondo- “Gam-jeom” which results in a one-point deduction and “Kyong-go” which is a warning penalty.
Two Kyong-go penalties result into one-point deduction.
If three points are deducted from a competitor’s scores as a result of penalties, then he/she loses the match.
Knockdown
If a competitor’s any part of the body other than the foot touches the floor, it is said to be a knockdown.
After this, the referee begins a 10-second count and continues it till at least eight (even if the downed athlete rises) to decide whether to continue the match, end the match or to continue the count.
