There are two types of scoring systems in show jumping: Table A and Table C. In table A type, each of the fault is penalized with certain no. of penalties while table C types are known as speed competitions in which faults incurred are converted into seconds and then added to the time taken to complete the round.
The horse and rider combination who incurs least no. of penalties, or completes the course in the fastest time or who gains the highest scores is declared the winner depending on the type of competition.
In the case of a tie, a jump-off takes place over a raised and shortened course and the course is timed. If again the faults accumulated in the jump-off are tied, then the fastest time wins.
Horse and rider may be penalized for disobediences, falls, knockdowns and touches and time penalties. Some of the situations are:-
