Kiteboarding, also called kitesurfing, is a surface water sport which fuses elements of windsurfing, snowboarding, surfing, paragliding, etc. into one extreme sport. The power of the wind is harnessed by a competitor with a large controllable power kite that is to be propelled across the water on a board similar to a small surfboard or a wakeboard, with or without bindings or foot straps. The sport had its roots in the 1800s when George Peacock used kites of large sizes to propel ships on the water and carts on land, using a four-line control system, the same that is used today. The sport has gradually increased in popularity since the late 1990s and in 2012, after a high-profile campaign, the Olympic Committee agreed to include it in the official program for the 2016 Games, replacing windsurfing. However, later in the same year, they reversed their decision.
