Ju-jitsu is an ancient Japanese martial art that has been practiced for more than 2500 years. In feudal Japan, samurai used the martial art to defend themselves against armed opponents. From the early 1600s to late 1800s, more than 700 systems of ju-jitsu existed.
Although there are many variations of ju-jitsu, it consists primarily of grappling techniques that are based on using the attacker's energy against him. Methods of combat include striking, throwing, restraining, and weaponry. The defensive tactics include blocking, evading, off-balancing, blending and escaping. Ju-jitsu is the parent of many other martial arts, including judo and aikido.
