Ice Sailing also known as Ice Yachting is a sport of sailing and racing ice yachts (ice boats). The sport is practised in Great Britain, Austria, Poland, Germany, Norway and Sweden, is very popular in the Netherlands and on the Gulf of Finland and is highly developed in the US and Canada.
It was a form of transport on the Gulf of Riga and on the canals of the Netherlands in the 17th and 18th centuries. The sport began in the US in the 1860s and '70s and later spread to Europe, where it declined in popularity after World War II while continuing to have enthusiasts in North America.
In current years, the Ice sailing races usually take place on the Great Lakes, both in the US and Canada, at the Lake Geneva, Wisconsin area, with an average of 25 sailing days a season for the last 5 years, Lakes Winnebago and Pepin in Wisconsin, the St. Lawrence River, Quinte Bay and Lake Champlain and other lakes also.
