Cockfighting, the cruel game, also known as “Murgh Janghi” in the Afghani language, is a famous game among the Afghans during the winter season which was earlier forbidden by the Taliban rulers. Though controversial, it is the national sport of Philippines.
In cockfighting the roosters are made ready by sharpening their heels and bills before fights and an artificial pointed and sharp nail is also attached to their feet so that the fight can be more violent and aggressive which runs about 4-6 rounds. Each round remains between 10 to 20 minutes with a gap of 5 minutes in between the bouts.
Detested by animal rights activists around the globe, cockfighting is one of the earliest observer sports which traces its history back to 4000 BC in Persia. Although it is illegal in all 50 nations, The Humane Society alleges that cockfights still prevails and describes this ruthless sport in the following manner:
"Left to themselves, roosters almost never hurt each other badly. In cockfights, on the other hand, the birds often wear razor-sharp blades on their legs and get injuries like punctured lungs, broken bones and pierced eyes—when they even survive"- Humane Society
