Ball Badminton Rules

• The game is played between two teams, each consisting of five players. Each team sub-divides its players according to their position as two fronts, one centre and two back payers. Each team has extra five players as the substitutes. Each match is referred to as a game of 'Fives' worth of 35 points. 
• The competition formats include doubles and mixed doubles format. In these formats, two players from each team participate. 
• The playing ball is made from a yellow ball with a total weight of 22-23 grams. The ball should have a diameter of 5 to 5.5 cm.
• The playing racquet should have a length of 63 to 70 cm with a weight of 200 to 250 grams. The racquet tip has a meshwork with a fine cord of 2 cm length. 
• The net placed in the middle of the field has a width of 100 cm and a length of 13.5 meters. The net is usually of red, blue and white colour and divides the field into two equal courts for the participating teams.
• There are two posts fixed outside the court with a height of 2 meters. The net is tied on a hook placed at 1.5 meters above the pole. 
• The opposing team scores one point if the receiving team misses the ball. In this case, the power of serving goes automatically to the serving team in the first round. 
• If the teams included any three subsequent substitutes, then a time out of 1 minute is provided to both the sides. 
• The boundary of the field is indicated with white ropes that have a thickness of 5 mm. The centre line is also marked with 10 mm broad line for the ease of players, this is a must rule followed by the organizers before arranging the match.
• For qualifying into the quarter-finals, each team is judged according to their performance in the best of three manners. 
• An interval of 2 minutes is provided when the first round is over. A five-minute break is given to the players after the end of 2nd match and before the 3rd round. 
• A toss is conducted before the match by the official to determine which side should be provided to a team and who should serve first.
• If any team refuses to play after the umpires have called out "Play", the team automatically loses.
• The umpire has the power to replace the ball if it gets lost or deformed. They can provide a re-service for any certain circumstances such as accidents. For the entire match, the assigned umpires aren't changed. The umpires also monitor faults and penalties performed by the players intentionally or unintentionally.

Penalty and Faults

The following are regarded as fault during a ball badminton match if -

• The server's feet touch the ground during service.
• The server drops the ball during service or serves it from a wrong court.
• The ball hits the ground before moving in the opponent's court or blocked by the net.
• A player touches the ball twice or more while striking the ball towards the opposing players.
• A player comes in direct body contact with the ball. The player's uniform touches the ball.
• The racket touches or crosses the central net during a pass or service.
• The ball crosses or falls on any designated line such as the boundary line.
