The sport was originated in 1915 on the beaches of Waikiki Beach in Hawaii, specifically at the Outrigger Canoe Club.
Originally the game was played between the teams of six players each side, but the concept of two-player volleyball was originated in 1930 in Santa Monica, California. The sport is also a part of the Summer Olympics since 1996. The international federation of the sport FIVB was founded in 1947.

The Olympia World Championship is viewed as the first professional beach volleyball tournament, held in 1976 at Will Rogers State Beach in California.
Beach volleyballs are usually larger than standard volleyballs and have lower internal pressure. These usually have a circumference of about 26-27 inches and weigh around 260-280 grams.
A beach volleyball net is affixed on two upright poles that are situated opposite each other at a certain distance. The measurements of the net vary according to men's, women's and junior games respectively.
Male players wear swimsuits or vests and shorts while female players have the option to wear a one-piece swimsuit, shorts or a two-piece dress.
