When the athlete is called by his / her name, they have sixty seconds to commence the throwing motion.
The athlete is not allowed to wear gloves but is allowed to tape their fingers.
The athlete must rest the shot close to the neck, and keep it tight to the neck throughout the motion.
The shot must be released above the height of the shoulder, using only one hand.
The ball is to be put and not thrown with an overhead motion.
While putting the shot, the athlete may touch the inside surface of the circle or stop board, or the ground beyond the circle, but must not touch the top or outside of the circle or stop board.
The shot must land inside the throwing sector(not including the line).
The athlete must enter and exit the throwing circle from the rear part.
Typically each athlete is given three throws in the preliminary rounds to determine qualification for the finals and then three rounds in the field.
The athlete with the longest legal throw is declared to be the winner regardless of whether it was achieved in the prelims or in the finals.
In the case of tie, the athlete with the next best effort (distance) is declared to be the winner.
Shot put Measuring Rules:
The distance thrown should be measured from the inside of the stop board to the nearest mark made in the ground by the falling shot, with distances rounded down to the nearest centimeter.
The mark of the closest shot to the throwing circle should be measured from the zero end of the tape.
Fouls:
If the athlete allows the shot to drop below the line of the shoulder at any stage of the put.
If the shot (ball) loses contact with the neck.
If the shot lands outside of the 35-degree sector.
If the athlete leaves the throwing circle before the shot landed.
If the athlete does not leave from the rear half of the circle.
