Athletes are classified according to their disability types in one of the three main categories:-
The classes are:-
Impairment of one leg, use prosthesis and ski with two skis.
Impairment in both legs but compete in standing skiing
Impairment in the lower leg but less impact on skiing than in LW2
Impairments in both arms so they can’t use ski poles
Impairment in one arm which is fixed to the body and can’t be used in the competition and use a ski pole with the other hand.
Moderate impairment in one arm, can use one ski pole only
Impairment in arms and legs, use one or two ski poles depending on their ability.
Limited leg and trunk function, unable to sit without the support of his/her arms.
Limited trunk control, but can keep their sitting balance while not moving sideways
Impairment in one leg and fair trunk control, can keep balance even when moving sideways
Near to normal trunk control
Impairments similar with LW2-4, i.e., have a leg impairment but normal trunk control and can choose their preferred way of skiing (either standing or sitting).
Either blind or very low vision acuity, wear eyeshades during races and a guide is mandatory for athletes
Higher visual acuity compared to B1 class athletes, have a choice to ski with a guide
Least severe visual impairment (either restricted visual field or low visual acuity), have a choice to ski with a guide.
