Home to the French Association football club Montpellier HSC, Stade de la Mosson is well known for hosting rugby and soccer events in Montpellier. Formerly the stadium had the seating capacity to hold up to 16,000 spectators which was later on expanded to host major sports events such as the great FIFA. To host the matches of the FIFA World Cup in 1998, a three-tier grandstand was also built in the stadium that increased its seating capacity up to 35,000.

The stadium has been flooded twice during the heavy rain in Montpellier due to which the home team Montpellier HSC has to relocate for 5 fixtures.
Significance
- The stadium was entirely rebuilt to host the FIFA World Cup matches in 1998 and was also used to host the group stage matches of the 2007 Rugby World Cup.
- The stadium hosted its rugby league match on 9th June 2012.
- It has also hosted the semi-final match of the 2012–13 Heineken Cup on 27th April 2013 between the rugby union clubs ASM Clermont Auvergne and Munster Rugby.
- Stade de la Mosson has been selected as one of the venues to host the 2019 FIFA World Cup matches.
