The Olympiastadion (also known as the Olympiastadion München) is located in Munich, Germany. This stadium was built as the prime venue for the 1972 Summer Olympics, inaugurated on the 26th of May 1972 after a span of four years of construction. Its original capacity during the inauguration was 80,000. At present, it has a capacity for 69,250 spectators. The architectural style of the full and transparent canopy is to symbolize the new, democratic and optimistic Germany.

Trivia

The stadium was constructed by Bilfinger Berger between 1968 and 1972 in a depression of earth made by bombings during the World War II.

Significance

West Germany played an unforgettable match at the stadium with USSR on 26th of May 1972. It was the stadium opener match in which Germany won by 4-1.
The stadium hosted the World Cup final on 7th July 1974. Germany beat Netherlands by 2-1.
The stadium witnessed the victory of Germany over Spain by 2-0 in the Euro Cup qualifier of 1976.
On 17th November 1985, West Germany tied up with Czechoslovakia (2–2) in the 1986 World Cup qualifier.
On 17th of June 1988, West Germany defeated Spain by 2–0 in the Euro Cup group match.
West Germany beat Netherlands by 2-0 in the 1990 World Cup Qualifier.
On 31st of December 2006, the stadium made history by being the first venue to host the "Tour de Ski" cross-country skiing competition.
On 17th May 2012, the ground played host to the 2012 UEFA Women's Champions League Final.
