The Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre is a multi-purpose arena; located in Nanjing Hexi New City and spread across an area of 89.6 hectares (it has a total construction area of around 401,000 square meters). The construction of the center began in 2002 and was opened to the spectators on 1st of May 2005. The arena was exquisitely designed by the well-known architectural firm Populous (formerly known as HOK Sport). Two massive arches ribbon-like structures stand bent over the stadium visually strengthening the stadium with bright red colour. These structures are 360m long and are in contrast with the stadium’s concrete and glass structure. The center includes 61,443 seater multi-use stadium, 13,000 seater Grand Gymnasium, 4,000 seater FINA standards Aquatic Complex, 4,000 seater Tennis Center,23,000 square meters Information Technology Center and various recreational sports fields.
Trivia
The Nanjing Sports Park has now become the model stadium for future sports park developments in China. The area within a park setting, forms the centerpiece of a new downtown region proving a catalyst for future urban development.
Significance
The stadium served as the main venue in the National Games of China that took place in the year 2005.
The Swimming pool is in full compliance with FINA's standards.
The opening and closing ceremonies of the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics were hosted by the Nanjing Olympic Sports Center.
