Michigan Stadium, situated in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is the football stadium for the University of Michigan and was inaugurated on 1st October 1927. It is also known as "The Big House" and is the largest stadium in the United States and the second-largest stadium in the world. It has an official capacity of 107,601 but has hosted a crowd of over 115,000. Michigan Stadium It was built for about $950,000 and had an original capacity of 72,000.

Michigan Stadium is used for the main graduation ceremony of the University of Michigan; President Lyndon b. Johnson outlined his Great Society program at ceremonies beginning at the stadium in 1964. It has hosted a record attendance of 105,491 during the 2014 NHL Winter Classic in a match between Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Additionally, the 2014 International Champions Cup football match between Real Madrid and Manchester United had an audience of 109,318, a record crowd for a football match in the United States. Major renovation work was completed around the 2010 season, and the stadium has undergone several expansions since its construction.

Footings were used in the designing of the stadium to enable the capacity of the stadium to be expanded over 100,000.

Significance

Before the construction of the stadium, the Wolverines played football at Ferry Field. All home games since November 8, 1975, have attracted a crowd of more than 100,000, which is an active streak of more than 200 contests.
The game between Michigan and Notre Dame attracted a crowd of 115,109 on 7 September 2013, which is a record attendance for a college football game since 1948 and a record single-game attendance of the NCAA at that time, surpassing the previous record of 114,804 set two years before for the same confrontation.
