The Khalifa International Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium, situated in Doha, Qatar. It is often referred as the 'National Stadium'. The stadium was opened to the spectators on 3rd March 1976 and underwent a renovation in the year 2005. Before the 2005 renovation, the Khalifa International Stadium was mainly used to host football matches. The Qatar Football Association owns the stadium. The entire field has natural grass and the venue can hold around 40,000 spectators. The Khalifa International Stadium is currently the home of the Qatar national football team.

Trivia

It is the venue that has been chosen to host the 17th IAAF World Championships in Athletics which will be held in 2019 and to host the FIFA World Cup which will be held in 2022.
Khalifa International Stadium has been named after Qatar's former Emir, Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani.

Significance

The stadium has been hosting the track and field event of the Qatar Athletic Super Grand Prix since 1997. It now hosts the event as a part of the IAAF Diamond League.
The stadium hosted the 2004 Gulf Cup of Nations and the Asian Games in 2006.
In 2011, the stadium played host to the Pan Arab Games. Besides this, Group-A matches, a Quarterfinal match and a Semi-final match of the AFC Asian Cup were also conducted here.
It has hosted six international friendly football matches in between 2009-2013.
