The HDI-Arena is primarily a football stadium, situated in Hanover, Germany. The stadium was called the Niedersachsenstadion from 1954 to 2002. From 2003 to 2013, this stadium was known as AWD-Arena. It has been named as HDI-Arena due to a sponsorship deal. The stadium opened its gate for spectators on 26th September 1954. The chief architecture firm involved in the construction of the arena is Schulitz & Partner Architects. The total construction cost of the stadium was € 82.8 million. The Arena is operated by Hannover 96 Arena GmbH & Co. KG. The stadium is the home to the Bundesliga football club, 'Hannover 96'.

Trivia

The foundations of the stadium were built with the debris of houses destroyed in Hannover during the World War II.

Significance

The Group 'A' match (between Denmark and Spain) and the Group 'B' match (between Ireland and USSR) of the 1988 European Championships were held in this stadium on 11th and 15th June, respectively.
Two of the Group 3 matches and two of the Group A (2nd round) matches of the 1974 FIFA World Cup were held in the stadium.
"The Rolling Stones" have performed at the venue as part of their Tours, held in between 1982-2006.
Four of the Group matches (Groups E, D, A, and G) and 'Round of 16' match of the 2006 FIFA World Cup were held here in 2006.
The stadium hosted the 2008 Hannover Sevens in June 2008. It is the European Sevens Championship in rugby union.
Famous British rock band "Coldplay" have performed at the stadium on 22nd September 2012 as a part of their Mylo Xyloto Tour.
