The Birkebeineren Ski Stadium, located in Lillehammer, Norway is a cross-country skiing and biathlon venue. The area has been divided into two states, one for cross country with 31,000 seats and another one for biathlon with 13,500 seats. The construction started in early 1991, managed by Lillehammer Olympic Organizing Committee and lasted till 1992. The stadium was officially opened on 28th November 1992 with an international biathlon competition. It was originally built to host the 1994 Winter Olympics but was subsequently used for the 1994 Winter Paralympics for Paralympic biathlon and Paralympic Nordic skiing.

Trivia

The Birkebeineren Ski Stadium is also used as a recreational venue. It connects to 450 kilometres of skiing track that are lit till 11 o’clock in the night during winters. During summer, the stadium is opened for jogging, running and other related activities.

Significance

During the 1994 Winter Olympics, ten cross country skiing events, six biathlon events, and two Nordic combined events took place at the venue.
It hosted the Norwegian Nordic Ski Championship in 1993.
The Birkebeinerrennet which is a ski marathon has been annually held here since 1992.
The stadium has hosted the FIS Nordic Combined World Cup tournaments in 1998, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2010.
The FIS Cross-Country World Cup was conducted three times at the venue (in 1993, 2000 and 2002).
The venue also hosted the Paralympic Nordic skiing events and Paralympic biathlon events of the 1994 Winter Paralympics.
