Trivia
-
The arena was initially constructed as a football stadium but nowadays it hardly hosts sports activities and is predominantly used for cultural programs.
-
It is one of the oldest stadiums of Maharashtra as well as India, having completed its 45 years.
Yashwant Stadium is one of the biggest
football stadiums of
Maharashtra, situated in
Nagpur, considered as one of the best stadia of the state, but due to lack of proper maintenance, it hardly hosts sports activities. In the year of
1962,
Nagpur Municipal Corporation (
NMC) received
13.56 acres of land from the
Maharashtra Government on lease to construct the stadium, but the stage was built only in around
3.60 acres of land. Constructed between
1970-
1974, it is considered as the
oldest stadium of Maharashtra. This is an old structure, so the Nagpur Municipal Corporation has decided for the redevelopment of the stadium. Due to insufficient parking areas, big jams are usually created in front of the stadium, during the matches or other cultural activities. That’s why; NMC is planning to create ample parking space in the stadium. It is planned by NMC that new stadium should have the facility for both indoor and outdoor sports.
Significance
- Every year, the stadium hosts Nagpur Premier League football matches.
- It also hosts various cultural programs of schools, colleges and different associations.
