The RheinEnergieStadion is a football stadium in Cologne, Germany. It has been built on the site of the two previous Müngersdorfer stadiums. The local Bundesliga team FC Koln plays its home games here. It was formerly known as the Müngersdorfer Stadion but was renamed after the contract with the local power supplier RheinEnergie AG. The construction of the stadium commenced on 12th October 1921 and took two years to complete. The stadium finally opened its door for the spectators on 16th September 1923. The stadium has a crowd capacity of 50,000 for club matches and 46,915 for international matches. It also houses a museum on its north groundstand dedicated to FC Koln. During the initial days of the stadium, it used to host athletic meets for non-professional athletes.

Trivia

In 2004, the Stadium was given the bronze medal for distinguished sports and leisure facilities by the International Olympic Committee.

Significance

The stadium was amongst those venues that have hosted important matches of the 2006 World Cups. One of them was a match between Portugal and Angola, held on 11th June 2006 in which the former won by 1-0.
The stadium hosted the FIFA Confederations Cup in the year 2005. Three first round games were played here.
France beat Togo with a score of 2 goals to win their group stage match of the World Cup on 23rd June 2006.
American singer Pink performed here on 29th May 2010 in the "Funhouse Summer Carnival" which was held here.
The stadium has hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2010 Gay Games.
British Rock band "Coldplay" performed a concert here on 4th of September 2012.
Barbadian singer, songwriter, and actress Rihanna performed here on 28th July 2016 during her Anti World Tour.
