The stadium was formerly known by the names "San Diego Stadium" and "Jack Murphy Stadium". In 1997, the "Qualcomm Corporation" acquired the stadium's rights and since then it has been called the "Qualcomm Stadium".
The Qualcomm Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium, located in San Diego, California, United States. It is the home of the San Diego State University football team San Diego State Aztecs. Earlier, it was the home of two professional teams: the San Diego Chargers of the NFL (National Football League) and the San Diego Padres of MLB (Major League Baseball). The San Diego Sockers of the NASL (North American Soccer League) played at the arena from 1978 to 1983. The ground was opened on 20th August 1967 after a span of one year of construction, specifically designed by famous architecture firm Frank L. Hope and Associates.
Significance
- The stadium has also hosted several international friendly matches featuring prominent clubs such as Real Madrid, Portsmouth F.C., Chivas and Club América.
- Qualcomm Stadium was the venue of Major League Soccer's 1999 All-Star Game and Soccer Bowl '82 of the North American Soccer League.
- The Poinsettia Bowl is also played annually at Qualcomm Stadium.
- The stadium has hosted the Super Bowl XXII in 1988, Super Bowl XXXII in 1998, and Super Bowl XXXVII in 2003.
- The Qualcomm Stadium has also hosted the Major League Baseball All-Star Games of 1978 and 1992.
- The stadium played host to the 1980 AFC (American Football Conference) Championship Game.
- The stadium has hosted several FIFA tournaments including the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the U.S. Cup and many international friendly matches.
- American singer and song writer Beyoncé performed at the stadium on 12th May 2016 during her "The Formation World Tour".
- "The Holiday Bowl" (a college football bowl game) has been played annually at Qualcomm Stadium since 1978.
