At the time of the stadium's inception, it was known as the New Meadowlands Stadium but was designated as the Metlife Stadium, when insurance company Metlife purchased its naming rights in 2011.

It is the only NFL stadium which is shared by two clubs.
Located in the East Rutherford, New Jersey, just 8 miles away from the New York City, MetLife Stadium is a part of the Meadowlands Sports Complex; owned by MetLife Stadium Company. The stadium has celebrated around 30 years of existence and is counted amongst the oldest stadiums in the history of NFL. Various architectural giants were involved in the designing and construction of the stadium such as 360 Architecture, EwingCole, Rockwell Group, and Bruce Mau Design, Inc.
Significance
- The stadium hosted its first event on 10th April 2010 which was a Big City Classic annual college Lacrosse event.
- In 2017, the stadium was entitled as the "Venue of the Year" by the Stadium Business Summit.
- New York Giants hosted its first NFL regular season game at the stadium on 12th September 2010 in which they won over Carolina Panthers by 31-18. The same year, in the month of December, American professional football team Philadelphia Eagles staged a comeback against New York Giants which is known as the "Miracle at the New Meadowlands".
- The stadium was chosen to host the Super Bowl XLVIII on 25th May 2010. It was the very first time that a non-domed stadium was selected to host a Super Bowl event and that too in a cold-weather city.
- The stadium also held wrestling events primarily WWE events such as WrestleMania.
