On 16th January 2015, Pope Francis of the Roman Catholic Church visited the Philippines and met people at this venue during an event called "Encounter with the Families".
Mall of Asia Arena is situated at Pasay, Metro Manila in the Philippines. It was opened on 16th of June, 2012 and has been built on an area of more than 60,000 square meters. The arena boasts of world-class technology and facilities such as retractable Spalding basketball goals as per the NBA standards, center-hung scoreboards and Robbins floorings. The exterior of the Mall is designed eye-shaped. It serves as the second home for the Philippine Basketball Association whenever the Smart Araneta Coliseum is unavailable.
Significance
- In 2013, this was the venue where the first National Basketball Association game in Southeast Asia was held. It was played between Houston Rockets and the Indiana Pacers.
- The Philippines, being amongst three countries which hosted the FIBA (an association of national organizations which governs international competition in basketball) World Olympic Qualifying Tournaments for Men, hosted the match between China and Iran in 2013.
- The first Basketball game at the arena was held on 7th July 2012, played between teams B-Meg Llamados (Purefoods Star Hotshots) and the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters. The match was a part of the 2012 PBA Governors Cup semifinals.
- The volleyball team DLSU Lady Spikers won the UAAP women's volleyball championship hosted by the Arena on 6th March 2013.
