The stadium is named after beloved local comedian José Miguel Agrelot.
The Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot is located at the Golden Mile of San Juan, the capital city of Puerto Rico. It is the greatest indoor arena in Puerto Rico, dedicated to entertainment. The Puerto Ricans usually refer it as the “Choliseo”. The Coliseum opened on 4th September 2004 after a span of five years of construction. It is owned by the District Authority of the Puerto Rico Convention and managed by SMG (Southern Management Group).
Significance
- It was ranked 8th on the Top 50 Arena Venues of the world on 26th May 2011.
- The Billboard Latin Music Awards 2010 was held here on 29th April 2010. It was the first show conducted at the venue.
- American singer Usher and Beyoncé performed at the arena on 4th and 5th April in 2006. Famous rock band "The Rolling Stones" also gave a dynamic performance at the venue on 11th February 2006.
- The first tennis match held at the venue on 22nd May 2010 between Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras.
- Well-known Puerto Rican singer, actor and author Ricky Martin performed in the stadium for the first time on 18th February 2006.
- WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment), New Year's Revolution, took place at the Coliseum on 9th January 2005.
- The stadium hosted Elton John on April 28, 2007.
- The first ice-skating rink event held at the venue was "Disney on Ice" that commenced on 2nd April 2008.
- Madonna's performance on 27th January 2016 in the arena marked her return to Puerto Rico after twenty-two years.
- The first professional hockey game in Puerto Rico- NHL (National Hockey League) was also held here on 23rd September 2006.
- In 2005, the Coliseum was chosen as the International "Large Venue of the Year" by Pollstar- a prestigious U.S. based magazine. It is recognized as one of the most prominent venues in the world.
- Various artists such as Paul McCartney, Bruno Mars, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and Pitbull have performed at the coliseum in between 2010-2012.
- AF2 (Arena Football 2) Championship that held at the stadium on 26th August 2006, was one of the few professional arena football games played in Puerto Rico.
