Jeonju World Cup Stadium, also known as 'Fort Jeonju' is a football stadium in the South Korean city of Jeonju. This World Cup Stadium was built to host the FIFA World Cup 2002 that had been co-hosted by South Korea and Japan. The construction of the stadium started on 19th February 1999 and was officially opened to conduct sports events on 8th of November 2001. This stadium is the home of Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. The stadium is owned by Jeonju City and managed by Jeonju City Facilities Management Corporation.
Significance
- The FIFA World Cup 2002 was the first World Cup to be held in Asia and hosted jointly by two countries. It is also the first World Cup to be held in the continent rather than being hosted by Europe or America. The venue hosted two group stage matches and one round-16 match of the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
- The stadium ground complex has one above ground level and six underground levels.
- In 2011, the Jeonju World Cup Stadium hosted the final of AFC Champions League (Asian Football Confederation) for club football.
- In 2016, the final of the Asian Champions League was held in this stadium.
- The Jeonju World Cup Stadium was selected to host 2017 Under 20 FIFA World Cup and Asian Youth Netball Championship.
