Husky Stadium, Seattle, United States is an outdoor football stadium on the campus of the University of Washington. The stadium was completed in 1920 with a seating capacity for 30,000 spectators. Originally, the playing field was dirt which was replaced by natural grass in 1938. Since 1920, the Washington Huskies (athletic teams of University of Washington) hosted its football games at the stadium. The University also holds annual commencement in the arena every year in the month of June. The stadium underwent a significant renovation which was completed in 2013 at the expenditure cost of $280 million. Before the renovation, its total capacity was 72,500 that made it the largest stadium in the Pacific Northwest and the 23rd largest college stadium.
Significance
- Husky Stadium was the primary venue of the 1990 Goodwill Games as the opening and closing ceremonies and the track & field competitions were held here.
- During the 1990 Goodwill Games, former President Ronald Reagan and politician Arnold Schwarzenegger addressed the crowd. The stadium also witnessed performances of famous American Rock band Moody Blues and Russian hard rock band Gorky Park.
- The Husky Stadium has witnessed 12 National Football League (NFL) preseason games between 1955 and 1975.
- During the 1992 night game, ESPN measured the noise level over 133.66 dB ((well above the threshold of pain) which was marked as the highest noise level ever recorded for a college football stadium.
- Husky Stadium served as the temporary home of the Seattle Seahawks for five games (two pre-season and three regular seasons) in 1994.
