Estádio Serra Dourada was among the venues that have hosted significant events of Copa America in the year 1989.
Estádio Serra Dourada, located in Goias, Brazil, is a football stadium owned by the Goiás state Government. It was officially opened on 9th March 1975 and is reckoned amongst the best stadiums in Brazil. It has served as the home ground to many sports clubs such as Goias, Atletico Goianiense, and Vila Nova. The architecture of this stadium was designed by the Pritzker Prize winner Paulo Mendes da Rocha. The inaugural match at the stadium was played between Portugal National team and Goiás State All Stars where Goias beat Portugal by 2-1. Estádio Serra Dourada was amongst the venues that have hosted significant events of Copa America in the year 1989.
Significance
- The home club of this stadium, Goias Sporte Club has won the state championship seventeen times whereas the team Goiania never won this championship.
- Estádio Serra Dourada stadium witnessed a stunning match for which it is much publicized, was held in 1978 between Sao Paulo and Goias. 78,000 fans witnessed the match.
- The surface of the stadium is Bermuda Celebration that makes it unique.
- On 6th May 2013, this stadium hosted the musical concert of Ex-Beatle performer Paul McCartney during his "Out There" tour.
- On 9th March 1975, in the inaugural match between Portugal national team and Goias state All-stars, the first goal at the stadium was scored by Portugal’s team player, Octavio.
- The maximum attendance recorded at the stadium was 77,790 for the match between Goias State and Brazil.
- This stadium was also used for a replay match between clubs Atletico Mineiro and Flamengo of "Copa Libertadores" in 1981 by CONMEBOL, which was won by Flamingo.
