Estadio Mineirao, also known as Mineirão Stadium (officially known as Estádio Governador Magalhães Pinto) is located in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Officially opened on 5th September 1965, it is the largest football stadium in the state of Minas Gerais. The stadium is owned by the State Government of Minas Gerais and operated by Minas Arena. Cruzeiro Esporte Clube, a Brazilian multisport club, uses the ground as its home. Atlético Mineiro also plays some of its home matches here. Mineirão has hosted at least one match of the Brazilian national team in every FIFA World Cup qualifiers. It has also hosted matches of the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The stadium has also hosted the men/women football matches of the 2016 Olympic Games.

Trivia

In 1997, the stadium hosted the Campeonato Mineiro final match between Cruzeiro and Villa Nova which was witnessed by a record attendance of 132,834 spectators.

Significance

On 5th September 1965, the stadium hosted its inaugural game (a friendly match) between Minas Gerais state team and Club Atlético River Plate which was won by the former team with a score of 1-0.
The stadium saw its first international match on 7th September 1965. It was a friendly match between Brazil and Uruguay, won by the former with a score 3–0.
On 24th October 1965, the rivalry match between Atlético Mineiro (Brazilian club) and Cruzeiro (from Belo Horizonte) was held at the stadium. Cruzeiro beat AtléticoMineiro club by 1–0.
The CONMEBOL's Copa Libertadores 1976 Final between CruzeiroEsporte Clube and Club Atlético River Plate was conducted at the stadium on 21st July 1976. Cruzeiro won by 4-1.
On 8th July 2014, the stadium hosted the historic Brazil versus Germany FIFA World Cup match in which Brazil lost by 1-7.
The ground also serves as the venue for music concerts. It has hosted many artists and bands including Sir Elton John, Sir Paul McCartney, Beyoncé, Guns n' Roses (the band), and Maroon 5.
