The Mestalla Stadium is a football venue, located in Valencia, Spain. It was opened to the spectators on 20th May 1923 after a span of few months of construction, designed by Francisco Almenar Quinzá. Owned and operated by the Valencia Club de Fútbol, the stadium has been serving as the home ground for the Valencia Club de Fútbol since its origin. The Mestalla Stadium was called "The Estadio Luís Casanova" in between 1969-1994 and had been used as a concentration camp and storage warehouse during the Civil War. The stadium had to be renovated in the 1950s, being damaged due to the flood of October 1957.

Trivia

In 1969, the name of the stadium was changed to "Estadio Luís Casanova" in honor of club President of Valencia CF, Luis Casanova Giner. It was again renamed as the "Mestalla Stadium" in the year 1994.
The Mestalla Stadium is ranked as the fifth-largest stadium in the entirety of Spain (as of 2017).

Significance

In 1952, the stadium hosted an international match in which the Spanish football team played for the first time.
The stadium hosted three Group 5 football matches of the 1982 FIFA World Cup for Spain. They were held on 16th, 20th and 25th June 1982.
The stadium was the venue that was selected to host the 2011 Copa del Rey Final match between F.C. Barcelona and Real Madrid C.F. and was also chosen to host the 2014 Copa del Rey Final match for the same teams.
Mestalla Stadium served as national team's group venue when the 1992 Summer Olympics were held in Barcelona, Spain.
