Estádio da Luz is officially known as the 'Estadio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica'. It is a multi-purpose stadium, located in Lisbon city of Portugal. It was named in honour of Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz (Church of Our Lady of the Light). The construction work commenced in 2003, and the arena had been completely prepared within a year, specifically designed by HOK Sport (Populous). In 2014, it was chosen as the most beautiful stadium in Europe by a French newspaper 'L'Équipe' through its online poll. Living up to the meaning of its previous name, the new stadium focuses on light and transparency. The polycarbonate roofs of the stadium allow the sun rays to penetrate into the stadium and makes it more illuminated.

It is amongst the biggest stadiums in Europe regarding capacity and a UEFA Category Four stadium.
The Estádio da Luz has 156 executive suites.

Significance

The opening match in this stadium was played between Benfica and Club Nacional de Football where the former team won by 2-1.
This stadium hosted the final match between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid of UEFA Champions League in 2014. Read Madrid won by 4-1.
It also hosted the UEFA European Football Championship final match between Portugal and Greece in 2004. Greece won the match by 1-0.
On the tenth birthday, the stadium reached up to 11 million spectator mark and reportedly reached 2 million spectator marks in mid-2014.
The Estádio da Luz hosts many home games of association football for its owner S.L. Benfica and for numerous Portugal clubs.
