The Estadio Centenario is primarily used as a football stadium, located in Montevideo, Uruguay. The stadium was built between 1929-1930 to host the 1930 FIFA World Cup. Though all World Cup matches were intended to be conducted here, heavy rains delayed the construction. Hence a few matches were played in other stadiums. It is listed by FIFA as one of the football world's classic stadiums. It has a capacity of 60,235 and is owned by the Departmental Government of Montevideo.

Trivia

On 18th July 1983, FIFA declared the stadium as the only historical monument of World Football.

Significance

The stadium hosted its inaugural match on 18th July 1930, in a game between Uruguay and Peru. Uruguay won the match 1-0, with the first goal by Hector "Manco" Castro of Uruguay.
The final match of that World Cup was played between Uruguay and Argentina which was won by the former by a score of 4-2.
It has hosted the significant matches of Copa America in 1942, 1956, 1967 and 1995.
The stadium also witnessed the South American Youth Championship in 1979 and 2003.
It also played host to the South American U-17 Football Championship in 1999.
The stadium hosted the "World Champions' Gold Cup" termed as “1980 Mundialito”.
The stadium hosts all the home matches of the Uruguay National Football team. It has also hosted numerous concerts by both national and international artists and bands such as Enrique Iglesias, Guns N' Roses, One Direction, Paul McCartney, and The Rolling Stones.
