Ellis Park Stadium is located in the Johannesburg city in the Province of Gauteng in South Africa. It is also known as Emirates Airline Park due to sponsorship reasons. The stadium predominantly hosts Association Football and Rugby Union events. It was titled as "Ellis Park" after Mr. J.D. Ellis, who strived to make the area available for the stadium. In between 2008-2012, the stadium was known as Coca-Cola Park due to naming rights agreements with the Coca-Cola Company. The construction work commenced in 1927 and took around a year to complete.

Trivia

Ellis Park became the first black-owned stadium in South Africa in 2005.
The concert of Whitney Houston, held at the stadium on 12th November 1994, was recorded as a home video and then released with the title "Whitney: The Concert for a New South Africa'.

Significance

It has also witnessed the Fed Cup finals in the year 1972.
Six Test cricket matches have been played at the Ellis Park from 1948 to 1954.
The stadium has hosted all forms of football games. Prominent teams such as Brazil, Arsenal and Manchester United have played memorable matches here.
Ellis Park stadium hosted three group stage matches, a semi-final and the final match of FIFA Confederations Cup in the year 2009.
Ellis Park stadium has also hosted five group stage matches, one round of 16 match and one quarter finals match of FIFA World Cup in the year 2010.
The Rugby World Cup final was played here on 24th June 1995 June which was witnessed by 65,000 spectators.
