The stadium was initially called the Daegu World Cup Stadium. Later on, it was changed to Daegu Stadium on 5th March 2008.
The Daegu Stadium is a sports stadium which is located in Daegu, South Korea. The stadium is also known as the Blue Arc. The construction started on 29th July 1997. An estimated amount of US$265 million was spent on the construction of this magnificent stadium. The chief architecture firms involved in designing the state-of-the-art stadium are Kang Cheol-Hee and Idea Image Institute of Architects (IIIA). After four years, the stadium was finally opened for spectators on 28th June 2001. The Daegu Stadium is owned by the Daegu Metropolitan City and operated by the Daegu Sports Facilities Management Center. The roof of the stadium has been split into two halves. Each half is with an inclined trussed steel arch. The stadium has been the home for the Daegu Football Club since the year 2003.
Significance
- The Daegu Stadium is the venue that hosts the Daegu Marathon which is held in April, each year.
- The stadium played host to the 22nd Summer Universiade in 2003.
- The 13th edition of IAAF World Championships in Athletics was hosted in the Daegu Stadium in the year 2011.
- The stadium was the venue for the 8th Asia Song Festival. It was conducted by the Korea Foundation for International Culture Exchange, in the year 2011.
- It was one of the stadiums selected to host the 2002 FIFA World Cup. It hosted the Group A match between Denmark and Senegal on 6th June 2002, the Group B match between Slovenia and South Africa on 8th June, the Group D match between South Korea and the United States on 10th June and the Third-Place match between South Korea and Turkey on 29th June. It was the largest stadium in South Korea at the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
