La Caja Magica (The Magic Box) is also known as the Manzanares Park Tennis Center. It is located in San Fermin, in the district of Usera. The stadium is a part of the Park Manzanares and hosts the Madrid Masters Tournament every year. There are three courts and a series of retractable roofs. The main stadium has a capacity of 12,442. Designed by French architect Dominique Perrault, the main materials used for construction are steel, aluminium, concrete and glass. The arena is structured around two buildings – Magic Box and Indoor Tennis.

Trivia

For the Masters 1000 Tournament of 2012, the clay surface was replaced by the blue earth. This caused great controversy because of its slippery characteristic and risk of play. Several months later, the ATP reverted back to the traditional red clay court.

Significance

The stadium houses three tracks with movable decks. The central track which is officially called the Manolo Santana Stadium, offers a seating capacity for 12,442 spectators.
On the occasion of its inauguration on 8th May 2009, the opening concert featured rock singer Lenny Kravitz.
Music channel MTV conducted its MTV Europe Music Awards at the Caja Magica on 7th November, 2010.
In January 2013, the tournament hosted the Group D matches of the World Men’s Handball Championship.
The stadium is the home of the sports club MOMO and Caja Magica.
It is the headquarters of the Masters 1000 in Madrid, played in May every year. The tournament is also known by the name Mutua Madrid Open.
