The Ben Hill Griffin Stadium is the football stadium of the University of Florida. It is also known as 'The Swamp'. The full name of the stadium is Steve Spurrier-Florida Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. The stadium is the home ground for the Florida Gators football team. This great stadium is located in the University's Gainesville, Florida campus. It is the 12th largest stadium in American college football. The ground was broken for the construction on 16th April 1930 and an estimate amount of $118,000 was spent on it. The chief architect who constructed this stadium was Rudolph Weaver. On 8th November 1930, the stadium was officially opened for spectators. It underwent renovations in 2003, 2011 and 2015. The stadium is owned by the University of Florida and operated by the University Athletic Association.

Trivia

The stadium was called "Florida Field" in between 1930 -1989.
Florida Field was rededicated in 1934 as a sign of honoring those servicemen who served in the World War I. A plaque was placed behind the old north end zone in their memory.

Significance

The Rolling Stones performed at the Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on 27th November 1994. It was marked as the last concert held in the stadium.
The 1994 Gator Bowl was held in this stadium that pitted Virginia Tech Hokies against the Tennessee Volunteers.
The stadium was the venue that hosted the match between the Florida Gators and Tennessee on 19th September 2009.
It also witnessed the memorable clash between Miami and the Florida Gators, held on 6th September 2009. The Florida Gators won by 26-3.
The stadium also saw the Florida Gator's stumping 44-11 victory over South Carolina on 20th October 2012.
The stadium hosted the 1973 Tangerine Bowl (a college football bowl game) between the Florida Gators and the Miami Redskins.
