The arena has a unique facility of displaying the jerseys of retired players of the Montreal Canadiens. The jerseys have been hanged from the rafters.
The Centre Bell (or Bell Center) is a popular sports and entertainment complex in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The construction of the arena took around three years to complete it finally opened to the public on 16th March 1996. It is the home to the National Hockey League's Montreal Canadiens. Since its opening, it has consistently been listed as one of the world's busiest arenas. It was formerly called the Centre Molson.Â
Significance
- Centre Bell hosted a National Basketball Association (NBA) game first time on October 22, 2010. The arena hosted a total of five preseason games.
- The Bell Centre is one of the two NHL arenas (the other being the TD Garden in Boston) where the old-style siren (a type of alarm) is used to signify the end of periods. The siren was inherited from the previous Montreal Forum.
- The arena hosted the two finals of the 1996 World Cup for Hockey where the USA won both the games defeating Canada by 2-1.
- It hosted the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) events regularly. The most infamous event held at the arena is the Survivor Series in 1997. It also hosted the "No Way Out" in 2003 and "Breaking Point" in 2009.
- The arena also hosted two pool games in the 2004 World Cup of Hockey.
- The stadium hosted the first UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) event (UFC 83) that took place in Canada in April 2008. Other UFC events held here are the UFC 97, UFC 113, UFC 124, UFC 154 and the UFC 158.
- The arena hosted the 2009 National Hockey League All-Star Game.
