Bangabandhu National Stadium, also referred as the Dhaka Stadium, is the national multi-purpose stadium, located in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Home to the Bangladeshi Cricket Team until 2005, this venue has hosted 17 Test matches and 58 ODIs of International Cricket. Bangladesh Football Federation owns the stadium. It has an impressive capacity of holding 36,000 spectators. The stadium underwent a major renovation to host the significant events of Cricket World Cup in 2011. A large LED screen was installed during the renovation. This venue is prevalently used for football events these days.

Trivia

The current name of the stadium commemorates, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh, also known as Bangabandhu or the "Friend of Bengal".

Significance

The first ever Test cricket match of International repute was played here between Pakistan and India from 1st to 4th January 1955.
Muhammad Ali fought with a 12-year-old Bengali boy in February 1978 during an exhibition boxing match held here.
On 18th January 1998, Saeed Anwar from Pakistan scored 140 of 132 balls against India which is the highest recorded ODI score at the venue.
Inzamam-ul-Haq’s unbeaten 200 which helped Pakistan pull off a victory against Sri Lanka on 12th March 1999 is the highest recorded Test score at the stadium.
31st January 2005 is marked as the day of the last International ODI match played here between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe.
On 17th February 2011, the Stadium witnessed the opening ceremony of 2011 ICC World Cup that was co-hosted by Sri Lanka and India.
An international friendly football match was hosted here on 6th September 2011 between Argentina and Nigeria. Tayeb Shamsuzzaman, a Bangladeshi referee, officiated the game.
