The stadium is named in honor of Arthur Ashe, the winner of the 1968 inaugural US Open. This was the first time that professionals could compete.

The stadium is a four level building, comprising of 90 luxury suites, five restaurants, a two-level player’s lounge and modern broadcast and audio system. It also has a DecoTurf cushioned acrylic surface.
Arthur Ashe Stadium is a well-known tennis stage, located in Queen’s Borough, New York. It is the main stadium of the US Open tennis tournament and is marked as the largest tennis stadium in the world regarding capacity (23,771). The stadium was opened on 25th August 1997 by hosting the US Open. Famous American singer Whitney Houston sang at the inauguration ceremony of the stadium. Initially, the stadium did not comprise of a roof but after suffering successive years of event delays, a new lightweight retractable roof was added to the design and completed in 2016. The stadium has blue courts in contrast with the yellow tennis ball used while playing.
Significance
- The Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre contains 45 courts amongst which, 11 are used for practice. Only a few of these courts are used for playing the US Open and the Arthur Ashe Stadium is one of them.
- In this stadium, the William sisters (Serena and Venus William) met in the final of the 2001 US Open, becoming the first siblings in the history of US Open to meet in the finals. Venus Williams ultimately won the trophy.
- Andy Roddick won his first Grand Slam in 2003 US Open here.
- On 19th July 2008, the first ever Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) match was held at the stadium. Team Indiana Fever won over New York Liberty by 71-55. This was a charity match for breast cancer research.
