Arena Zagreb is the largest multifunctional hall in Croatia that was initially built to host the 2009 Handball World Championship. The arena is located in the southwestern part of Zagreb, Croatia. It was officially opened on 17th of January 2009. It has a huge seating capacity and serves shopping center, multiplex cinema, wellness center, numerous restaurants, cafes, and stores. The arena has witnessed numerous sporting competitions, concerts, exhibitions, fairs, conventions, and congresses, earning prominence as an invaluable icon of Croatia because of its capacity, multi-functionality, and technical equipment. The architect of the arena is UPI-2M Ltd. The main contractors were TriGránit (from Hungary) and Ingra (from Croatia).

Trivia

Arena Zagreb was given the "Structural Design of the Year" award at the 2009 World Architecture Festival and the "Grand spectacle" award at Global BBR 2010.
The construction of the sports hall started on July 20, 2007, and lasted for 503 days until December 15, 2008, the expenditure cost being €89 million.

Significance

The first event in the newly built Arena was a friendly handball game between Croatia and Russia on 27th of December 2008.
On January 17, 2009, Prljavo Kazalište’s grand opening concert took place in which 22,500 spectators participated.
Many of the games of 2009 World Men's Handball Championship were conducted in the stadium.
In 2010, NLB League Final Four for basketball was held here.
In the year 2010, 2011 and 2012, EHF Champions League for handball took place here.
2012 UEFA Futsal Championship was held here in February 2012.
The stadium hosted the 2016 Davis Cup final between Croatia Davis Cup Team and Spain Davis Cup Team.
The arena hosted Erste Bank Eishockey Liga ice hockey event in 2011 and 2012.
