A helmet is an essential piece of equipment in Luge. A streamlined headgear with a visor comes under the mandatory clothing of the sport. The equipment protects the head and the face in case of an accident or a crash against the sidewalls or due to the snow.
The manufacturers of luge helmets combine foam padding with Kevlar or fibreglass shell to provide complete protection to the head and face. As an athlete gets no headrest on the back of the sled, thus the helmets are designed to be lightweight. While crossing the curve on the tracks, G force causes a heavy jerk. The same force could substantially harm the neck and head, but the protection could be assured with helmets.
