The Women's Australian Hockey League is part of the Australian Hockey League (AHL). Organized by Hockey Australia, it is the most premier domestic hockey league in the continent. The league is considered as one of the toughest and most competitive national field hockey championships. Although men’s league started in 1991, the women’s event commenced in 1993. Due to the growing popularity of women’s field hockey all over Australia, Hockey Australia launched the event. As of 2015, the competition involved eight Australian domestic teams. However, since 2016 the Women's Australian Hockey League is contested by ten teams. Apart from the Australian domestic teams, two international teams from Malaysia and New Zealand also take part in the tournament, making it an international event. It has evolved into a tournament of eight national teams and two international teams. In 2001, men’s and women’s leagues were combined to form the Australian Hockey League. This alteration allowed the matches to be played in a home-away format.
