The Open Championship is an international golf competition for men, held in the United Kingdom. It is commonly known as 'The Open' or the 'British Open'. The first competition was held in the year 1860, at the Prestwick Golf Club, Scotland. It is a 72-hole tournament, played over a span of four days. The competition follows the stroke-play format. The winner of the Championship is conferred the Golf Champion Trophy which is also known as the "Claret Jug".

The Open Championship is a 72-hole stroke-play tournament, usually contested over a span of four days. Stroke play is a type of scoring system in golf.
It takes into account, the number of strokes used (or played) to put a ball in the hole during one round or a series of rounds. The player who puts the ball in the hole with the fewer number of strokes is declared the winner of the round.
Scores are reported in relation or subject to par so as to make it convenient to compare the scores between two players. The stroke-play is favorable when there is a tie, and the undisputed winner is to be decided.
