The South American Games, previously known as Southern Cross Games, is an Olympic-style regional competition, held between nations of South America. The event is organized in accordance with the guidelines issued by the executive committee of South American Sports Organization. The first Games were held in the year 1978 at La Paz, Bolivia. The competition has a custom similar to the Olympic Flame since its inception: the South American Flame, which is conveyed from Tiahuanaco, Bolivia, to the host city. Since 2014 edition, the Para-South American Games are held for South American Paralympic athletes. There are two other versions of South American Games known as Youth Games (initiated in 2013) and Beach Games (initiated in 2009). Beach Games include Beach Handball, Beach Football, Beach Rugby, Beach Tennis, Sailing, Surfing, Water ski etc.
