The tournament was held for the first time in 2014 as a replacement for the ECB 40 tournament that held from 2010 to 2013.

The Royal London One-Day Cup is a limited-overs cricket competition of fifty overs. As the name suggests, the tournament is played between the England and Wales first-class counties. In ECB 40, the number of overs was 40 which was increased to 50 for the new tournament. The format of the tournament resembles to the international ODI format. It was primarily organized by the England Cricket Board (ECB) for the young players in the county. Currently, the tournament consists of 18 teams from the counties of England and Wales. The competition consists of two groups that are geographically named as North group and a South group. Each group comprises of nine teams from which the top three teams progress to the knockout stage of the competition. The North group includes Derbyshire, Durham, Lancashire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, and Yorkshire whereas the South group comprises Essex, Glamorgan, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Kent, Middlesex, Somerset, Surrey, and Sussex.

Competition Format

Two groups each comprising of nine teams play the group stage matches in which each team plays against the other eight teams in the group.
Four of the eight matches are played at the home venue.
The winners of the group advance to the semi-finals whereas the second and third placed teams play a quarterfinal against a team from the other group after which the winner progresses to the semi-finals.
